Can Children Suffering with Eczema Have Pets?

Updated: May 22

They absolutely can and it's good for children to have relationships with animals.

Children want to have animals and it's very hard to say no. Unless they have a severe allergy, children suffering from eczema can have pets. Just avoid having pets sleeping in the same bed as the child as this can cause a lot of irritation. If they are itching badly at night when they're hot and under the blankets, having a pet in the bed would not be a good idea.

Be sure to hoover at least three times a week and make sure that the pets are not on the sofa where the child is sitting (especially at mealtimes). But if in doubt, contact an allergist or your GP and consult with them before having house pets.
